According to data from the US Census Bureau, 4.4 million businesses start every year. Yet research from the US Small Business Administration shows that only 50% of them survive beyond five years.

What are we to conclude? Starting a business is one thing; keeping it alive… another. 

At Will Reed, we have spent the past seven years observing and building startups from a management, operations, and culture perspective. We believe the last one is equally important, yet it does not receive as much attention as the other two since it is more difficult to measure in black-and-white terms.

That is why we created Will Reed’s Top 100 - to shine a spotlight on the third essential ingredient to startup success: culture. In a world focused on the outputs (i.e., valuation, funding, YoY growth, ARR, etc.), we aim to celebrate the inputs. 

Each Seed and Series A company named to this year’s list went through a *competitive application process and rigorous judging effort. It is clear they are innovators–not only in their product/offering–but in the way they foster purpose, community, and individual growth within their organizations.
